Eric Byrd Trio
The Eric Byrd Trio (EBT) is an internationally acclaimed jazz ensemble based in Maryland that has been performing together for over 25 years. They are widely recognized as “Ambassadors of Jazz,” having been sponsored by the U.S. State Department and the Kennedy Center to tour the world.
Musical Style & Sound
- Genre: A dynamic fusion of Swing, Bebop, Gospel, and Blues.
- Approach: They are known for a “rigorous, modern approach” to jazz standards and original compositions. Their sound is rooted in traditional jazz but elevated by soulful gospel harmonies and high-energy improvisation.
- Holiday Tradition: They are famous for their “A Charlie Brown Christmas” performances and recordings, which have become a seasonal staple in the DMV area.

The trio consists of three highly educated musicians, all of whom hold advanced degrees in music and serve as educators:
- Eric Byrd: Piano and Vocals (The group’s primary composer and a Grammy Award voter).
- Will Hazel: Bass.
- Alphonso Young, Jr.: Drums.

- Awards: Winners of the 2022 Wammie (Washington Area Music Award) for Jazz Recording of the Year for their album Twenty. They also received a Maryland State Arts Council Independent Artist Award.
- Collaborations: They have shared the stage with jazz legends like Wynton Marsalis, Chick Corea, and Randy Brecker.
